Uganda Opens Embassy In Mogadishu
Waxaa Qoray: Naciimo M. Abdi
The Ugandan government will this month open a well equipped and fully functional embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Henry Okello Oryem said the new envoy to the war-torn country; Prof. Sam Turyamuhika arrives in Mogadishu any time from now.
“Turyamuhika will be deputized by Maj Gen Nathan Mugisha, formerly Ugandan-led AMISOM commander in Somalia,” said Oryem on Wednesday.
The two high ranking officials were appointed to run the Ugandan commission in a Cabinet reshuffle in August last year.
Somalia is relatively peaceful following the annihilation of Al Shabaab insurgents in Mogadishu and other strategic towns.
Several western countries including United States and UK have since been in talks with President Mohamud on supporting post-war recovery programmes.
Having sacrificed hundreds of UPDF soldiers’ lives in the war against the Al Shabaab, Uganda now looks at strengthening political ties with the Mogadishu government to consolidate security gains and benefit economically.
Shortly after the election of Mohamud, Kenya’s foreign ministers led a delegation of businessmen from Nairobi to acquaint them with the new government.
